Via Scifi Pulse:

In the latest UK magazine Dreamwatch, Patrick Stewart & Stewart Baird shared some of their thoughts about Nemesis.

“I admitted straight away that I had never been a Trekkie,” Baird recalls. “I don’t remember seeing any of the Star Trek movies. I said to Rick and [Writer] John Logan and everybody, ‘The back - story is all well and good and we’re not going to undermine that, but I hope that everyone who hasn’t seen or been involved in the Star Trek ethos will enjoy the movie and understand it and get full satisfaction from it in it’s own right.’ I just treated Nemesis like a stand alone movie.”

[...]

Baird says that pace is very important to him and likens the pace of ‘Nemesis’ to another ‘Star Trek’ film. “Looking back, ‘The Wrath Of Khan’ was my style of movie,” reveals Baird. “So I really followed that in terms of its energy and filmic sense.”

[...]

“I was originally intrigued by the prospect of working with a non - Star Trek writer and director,” Stewart explains. “It had been my proposal that there should be a longer period between the last film and, if there were to be one, the next one. Through Brent Spiner’s association and friendship with John Logan, John’s name was suggested. That immediately excited me because I’d seen some of his work [Which included the Oscar nominated Gladiator]. I then learned that he was a fan of Star Trek: The Next Generation, though he’d not ever been someone who was involved in the writing of the show or the movies. So I thought that there was opportunity to do something a little different perhaps, to bring a new and different energy to the series.

[...]

Stewart having seen the private screening of the movie is quietly optimistic about the movie. “I have seen Nemesis and I think it’s terrific. I am absolutely delighted with it. I think that the last 30 or 40 minutes of the movie are a really exceptional bit of filmmaking.”
